If you need to scan film negatives or slides, youll need to upgrade to an option that has the ability to scan negatives.
You can probably get away with doing a test scan in Preview, which supports all TWAIN compliant scanners, which the Epson Perfection V500 and most of 'em are. The Epson Perfection V39 is the best option we tested for the majority of people that need to digitize printed photos or pages from books and magazines. I'd also see if there are any updates to the scanner software as well. to change that, unlock it by clicking the padlock at the bottom, you'll need your login (admin) name and password, which it'll ask you for, type it in, and it should unlock, change the permissions to read and write (not just read only), save it (*as needed*) and click on the padlock to lock it again, now try scanning. on one side should be the name, and the other side, the permissions. You should see "Sharing and Permissions". You should get a little window/box with the name of the hard drive, capacity, etc, and now look down at the bottom. Unless you are planning large-size prints, however, you will be fine with the 2300 or 2600 ppi of the Epson. To fix that, left- click on your main hard drive, or click once on it so that it's highlighted, then do a "Get Info" (apple+ I, Cloverleaf+I, Command+I, same 2 key combo, just different names) on it. The Epson Perfection V800 Photo cannot compete with proper film scanners such as the Reflecta RPS 10M, which yields an effective 4300 ppi for small format films, or the Reflecta MF5000, which manges to pull 3050 ppi from a medium format.
